Getting married at a historic estate…
Autumn and Jason knew they wanted a unique and beautiful wedding venue, one that resonated with their love of historic architecture. When they bought their own historic home in downtown Des Moines, it only seemed fitting that they would plan their wedding at one of the most storied and stunning wedding venues, which happened to be in their neighborhood – the Salisbury House. The incredible Salisbury House was built by cosmetics entrepreneur Carl Weeks and his wife Edith in the 1920s. They modeled the estate after the historic King’s House in Salisbury, England, filling it with art, rare books, and architectural details collected from their travels. Inspired by English manor architecture, the Salisbury House features grand stone exteriors with Gothic arches, lush terraced gardens, and elegant interior rooms filled with rich woodwork and art.
Couples choosing Salisbury House for their wedding often love the versatility of the grounds—there are picturesque spaces for outdoor ceremonies, refined indoor options for receptions, and countless backdrops for portraits. All of these features are what initially drew Autumn and Jason to the venue for their own wedding festivities. Its central location, ample character, and naturally romantic atmosphere make it a distinctive and memorable choices and perfect for the chic stylish vibe that the couple was hoping for.
Salisbury House offers a range of amenities that make it especially appealing for weddings. Couples can use the formal gardens and terrace for outdoor ceremonies, as well as several indoor spaces—like the Great Hall and Common Room—for receptions or cocktail hours. The estate provides guests to tour the interior during your cocktail hour (a full immersive experience!)
Autumn and Jason celebrated with their ceremony on the steps and gardens facing the beautiful estate, with their reception following in the courtyard. Guests enjoyed appetizers and delicious food provided by Tangerine and danced the night away!

Jason and Autumn held their ceremony in the garden facing towards the Salisbury House. Walking down the aisle, I loved seeing the emotions of everyone!
After mingling during their outdoor cocktail hour, we photographed a few brief sunset photos before we transitioned to enjoying their reception.
