Prep

hey there!

I am so excited that you have taken this step to experience something that will be SO incredible!  We know there’s a potential for many questions, and this page answers pretty much everything.  There’s a LOT here!  So make sure you take some time, read through everything, and revisit this page again before your session too!

I want you to know that I 100% believe that you will have beautiful portraits no matter what.  I’ll pose you in the most flattering way, choose the best lighting, and help guide you every step of the way.  You’re going to love it!

That being said, there are some key steps that YOU can take to ensure you have the photos you’re dreaming of!  Making intentional decisions about your wardrobe, skincare & tanning, hair, and so much more – all of these will impact the final results.  A successful session is all about doing lots of little things that add up to one amazing result.

Please know that many things listed on here are completely optional and up to personal preference.  If you don’t want to shave or wax, that’s totally cool.  The main idea of this page is that we want to help you get to as close to YOUR ideal in camera, before a shot is even taken.

Laziness or ambivalence in your planning with the expectation that I will just correct in photoshop should be avoided at all costs, and in fact you will save money in the long run by being intentional with your preparations.

Not planning can seriously compromise the quality of your final images. Take my word for it and spend the extra time and effort here!  Your attention to these areas will pay huge dividends in helping us create the highest quality final images for you.

CHOOSING OUTFITS

LET THE PLANNING BEGIN

Choosing your outfits is where the fun begins!   But it can also be tricky.  The most helpful thing you can do is create your own Pinterest board with all of your favorite inspiration pieces. The more you pin, the better!

  • favorite lingerie items
  • hair styles
  • makeup looks
  • poses you like
  • colors you love
  • accessories that interest you
  • other types of photography you love

WE WILL BE REFERRING BACK TO YOUR PINTEREST BOARD THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS TO ENSURE IT MATCHES EXACTLY WHAT YOU’VE DREAMED OF.

WHAT TO WEAR

grinnell boudoir photographer

Choosing your outfits for your boudoir session is half the fun! Of course wearing them and feeling fabulous is even better.  But I know that it can also be a source of stress.  We get asked ALL the time what to wear for shoots, so here’s our top recommendations!

Bodysuits & Teddies
One of the most popular options, if you’re wanting to have something with a bit more coverage or hide the tummy area, these are perfect!

High Waisted Panties
Panties that are high waisted are SUPER flattering on just about every body type.  We recommend getting the thong version if you have the option.

Garter Belts
Worn over the waist or hips and attached to stockings, these add a little something extra!  We have a few in our client closet.  Choose stockings without the elastic.

Bra & Panty Sets
Show some skin!  There’s SO many options out there.  We recommend sizing up for panties if you’re unsure, so things don’t dig into your skin too much.

waxing & shaving

TIDY OR NATURAL?

Of all the pre-session questions we get, this is the most common, so you’re in good company if you are seeking guidance!

Whether you choose to get a brazilian wax or bikini wax, shave, or go au natural, it’s 100% your choice and we’re fine with whatever you prefer!

IF you choose to wax, leave about 3-5 days for any redness or swelling to go down.  You’re also going to need to allow hair growth for about 2-3 weeks prior to allow for the best results.  We do NOT recommend going the DIY route with waxing.

IF you choose to shave, the night before or morning-of is the best option. Use a fresh razor, shave with the direction of hair growth to avoid irritation.  Lots of shaving cream and lotion, and plenty of warm water prior – all these help!

Make sure you don’t forget eyebrows too!  Don’t try anything new…just your regular routine or what you might do for a special occasion should work!

Our favorite tips and tricks to help you prepare for professional hair & makeup.

before your shoot

SESSION PREP TIMELINE

TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR SESSION

  • Finish with any spray-tanning or sun-bed tanning
  • Use lotion on your skin to keep from drying out

ONE WEEK PRIOR TO YOUR SESSION

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid being in the sun for long periods of time
  • Moisturize your skin and face.  Use lip balm. Baby your skin!
  • Use gentle cleansers for your face
  • If you have tight hamstrings, stretch!  Runners and those who spend a lot of time sitting often have tight hamstrings.  Some poses might stretch you a bit, so this will help!

3-4 DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR SESSION

  • Clean up your eyebrows with waxing, tweezing, or threading
  • Any hair changes like cut & color
  • Wax your bikini line
  • Get your wedding ring cleaned
  • Drink lots of water!

DAY BEFORE YOUR SESSION

  • Manicure and pedicure the day before so that it doesn’t chip or smudge
  • If you’re not waxing shave the night before or morning of your session.  Go slow and use a fresh razor
  • Drink lots of water!
  • Skip alcohol and parties.  Alcohol depletes the moisture in your skin and you don’t want that!
  • Get lots of sleep!

DAY OF YOUR SESSION

  • Arrive with clean face and remove all traces of makeup the night before with a gentle cleanser.
  • Arrive with loose fitting clothing and undergarments – this will make it so there are no lines in your skin from tight fitting bras or underwear
  • Wear a button-up shirt so that it’s easy to change once your hair & makeup is complete
  • Eat a light lunch or bring a snack!  Not the time to go for a meal that will make you feel less than stellar.
  • Bring outfits on hangers (if you can) to avoid wrinkles

SESSION DAY DETAILS

PACKING LIST

session day

  • Try to bring outfits in a way that things don’t wrinkle
  • Don’t forget to bring accessories!  Earrings, necklaces, and high heels – you don’t have to walk in the heels, so don’t fret!
  • If you are wearing hair extensions, bring them washed and ready to go
  • Arrive with a clean face using your regular moisturizer.  If you like the way you do your hair normally, feel free to arrive with hair done, but we can take care of it for you if you want!
  • Bring a snack.  We do not allow alcohol during sessions due to liability
  • We recommend bringing a seamless nude and black thong or G-string to wear.  Even if it doesn’t go with other outfits, it can be worn under some of our client closet items if you choose one!

THINGS NOT TO BRING

There’s lots of things to remember on the day of your photoshoot, but we hope you’ll also keep these things in mind so that your shoot goes well!

  • Corsets.  While they look beautiful and can work, they generally make it difficult to pose because they are meant to constrict your body.  If you’ve found one you love, share a pic with us ahead of time so we can make sure it will work.
  • Babydolls or chemis.  Boudoir photography looks best when we can see the shape and form of your body and curves.  I know it’s tempting to want to “hide” things with a looser garment, but it usually ends up adding more bulk and a less flattering end-result.  If you want more coverage, I recommend bodysuits or teddies.
  • Friends.  You may think it’s a good idea to bring someone else to your shoot, but it can be awkward and your friend will just be waiting around.
  • Alcohol or drugs.  Due to liability, we require all clients to remain sober and not engage in anything that would impair their judgement throughout their shoot.

PRE-SESSION PAYMENT PERKS

Choosing to pre-pay for your collection ahead of your session comes with PERKS!  Think of it like some amazing gifts with purchase…some that are EXCLUSIVE to pre-paying!

A FINAL WORD

As a photographer, I want the best for you.  At the risk of sounding very motherly, I’m going to state what might sound like the obvious: please use your common sense leading up to your session and DO NOT do stupid things like:

  • Show up to your photo shoot sun burnt from your recent day at the lake or a last minute tanning bed session

  • Show up with not enough outfit options

  • Go out partying with your friends the night before your photo shoot.

These have happened, and they will have a negative impact on your images.  Don’t be that girl!!!

Be intentional and plan ahead, and you should find yourself in a wonderful position for some epic images!  I’ll never hold the accidental stuff against you, it’s the completely preventable “I went to a beer festival two days before my session and didn’t protect myself from the sun” kind of negligence which you should avoid at all costs!
