Gracie & Tom’s Fall Des Moines Heritage Center Wedding

Imagine this for your wedding day: you’ve planned a beautiful celebration with the love of your life, gorgeous florals are in place, the weather is perfect, your makeup is finished, and you’re ready for your mother to help you put on your wedding gown. Your photographer arrives to begin the day with photographing a few of your personal details and then, your worst nightmare happens: all of those details, including the heirloom family bible, your fun wedding shoes, and BOTH sets of wedding bands are gone. Gone gone. They are nowhere to be found. Not in the car, the venue, the hotel room…this was how Gracie & Tom’s wedding day started when I first arrived at the Des Moines Heritage Center on a late fall morning. All of the joy and anticipation of their day was taken over by a sudden vacuum of emotions. Their most treasured and personal parts of their wedding day had literally been stolen from them

Allyssa & Brandon Fall Engagement Session – Des Moines

Alyssa and Brandon had the most perfect weather for a fall engagement session in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. We started on the steps of the old state library building which has the most beautiful white arched architecture. We then crossed the street to find perfect fall colors on the lawn of the State Capital building. Next we stopped off at the bridge to capture them with some of the downtown skyline and city scape beind them and got some classic shots of them crossing the street. Alyssa’s wrap dress was perfect for this and the color added to the classic element of their session.

Austin & Allison Engagement Session- World Food Prize

After growing up together in the same small town Austin and Allison didn’t start dating until college. Their parents were friends and they often socialized together as kids. Once they started dating it didn’t take long for them to know that this was meant to be.
Austin planned and coordinated the most epic surprise proposal. Allison was enjoying a girls night out at a winery in Indiana while Austin was supposedly back home in another state. When she and her friends were offered a tour of the winery, she was shocked to find Austin awaiting her with a ring! He even hired a photographer to capture the moment!

Elissa & John | Catholic Wedding in Grinnell

Elissa was stunning in her classic and elegant gown. The neckline and lace back were a hushed reflection of her quiet but tenacious attitude towards this big moment. The light was just right, and she was radiant as she started down the aisle. Earlier, at the first look, John was speechless as he turned to see her for the first time in her gown. After eleven years together, it was obvious that they were ready for this moment. Meeting in college and sharing a love of music and saxophone, it became apparent quickly that they had more than just musical chemistry going on. They have grown together as a couple and musicians and have learned how to compliment each other in beautiful ways as they prepared for marriage.

Emily & Taylor Engagement | World Food Prize

Emily and Taylor had the most perfect fall weather for their downtown engagement session. After meeting in college at a party, it didn’t take long for these two to know things were meant to be. During a trip to Hawaii, Taylor had planned an epic proposal on the beach at sunset, complete with hiring a photographer to capture their special moment.

We started on the perfectly manicured grounds of the World Food Prize building in Des Moines. We love to do engagement sessions here, as there is so much variety in such a small area. The steps on the front and back side of the building add so much detail to the final images. After exploring all of the little areas around the building and gardens, we headed down to the riverwalk for a totally different look and feel. We love to include different architectural details, like the bridges in the background

Claire & Keith’s Classic White Wedding at Hotel Fort Des Moines

It all started when Claire and Keith met when they were in the wedding party at a mutual friends’ wedding. The drinks were flowing and the dance floor was inviting a connection – and it stuck! They continued dating long distance until Claire moved closer to complete law school. Suddenly, a 7 hour drive was cut down to a 2 hour drive. Throughout many dates, which likely included sushi, breweries, and golf, they soon were ready to start traveling together too. After a trip to Austria and a surprise proposal on the beach during a family trip, they began to plan for their classic ballroom wedding at Hotel Fort Des Moines.

One of my favorite things to ask couples is what they want to be known for as a couple as they grow old together. The responses always reveal something so great, here’s Claire & Keiths…

The Perfect Downtown Des Moines Engagement Session: Addie & Jake

Addie & Jake have lived in downtown Des Moines for a while, so it was only natural to feature some of their favorite local spots for their engagement photos.  We started at their apartment for some rooftop views of the Des Moines skyline, and then went on to explore some of their top spots! We dashed inside for a quick “family Christmas card photo” featuring their sweet dog and adorable cat.  I love these! Addie shared with me that because they live close to downtown, she is able to walk to work (which I LOVE).  When you get out of your car, you usually find the best spots for photos!  This next location, close to the Meredith Corporation (home of publications like Better Homes & Gardens) is one I’ve driven by countless times and have seen other people use for photos, but I’ve never had the opportunity. I love that
